That's the sticker price for one year — a four-year bachelor's at a public university (out-of-state) runs about $200,000 (~5.3 billion VND) before scholarships. But a high sticker price doesn't mean a high real cost: many private schools hold large scholarship funds for strong international students, and living costs in the Midwest are far below New York or California.

The most effective way to cut costs is the 2+2 route: two years at a community college at ~$8,000–$15,000/year tuition, then transfer to a university for the final two — the bachelor's degree is issued by the university, indistinguishable from four years on campus.

Scholarships: how to cut costs by 25–75%

Scholarships aren't just for valedictorians. U.S. universities award billions every year for academics, talent and financial need — and the most common for Vietnamese students is the merit scholarship, usually considered automatically with your application, typically covering 25–75% of tuition.

A competitive scholarship profile usually combines:

• A GPA of 8.0/10 or higher, consistent across years;
• IELTS 6.5+ or TOEFL 80+;
• SAT 1200+ — many schools publish clear score-based scholarship tables, so raising test scores is the fastest way up a scholarship tier;
• Extracurriculars with depth, and essays that tell your own story.

Timing matters as much as the profile: applying early always helps, because scholarship budgets run down through the admission season. Financial proof: how much, and which documents?

Financial proof is where Vietnamese applications stumble most — and you pass through it twice: first with the school to receive your Form I-20, then with the consular officer at the visa interview. The amount isn't guesswork: it is exactly the cost of attendance (COA) on your Form I-20 — tuition, living costs and insurance — for at least the first year, with a credible plan for the rest.

The core documents are the family's savings book or bank statements: clear bank name, account holder and available balance, ideally stamped statements covering the last 3–6 months, plus proof of the sponsor's income. The two most damaging mistakes: a large sum appearing suddenly right before the interview, and details that don't match across documents, the I-20 and the DS-160.

The F-1 student visa: a 5-step process

The F-1 is the visa for full-time study in the U.S. The process has five steps, starting the moment a school admits you:

• Receive the Form I-20 — issued once your financial documents are accepted; note your SEVIS ID and sign the I-20.
• Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee — required before booking the interview; print the receipt.
• Complete the DS-160 online — every detail must match the I-20 and passport exactly.
• Pay the visa fee and book the interview at the Consulate/Embassy.
• Interview — bring your passport, I-20, SEVIS receipt, DS-160 confirmation page, and academic and financial documents.

The interview usually lasts only minutes, in English, and revolves around three things: what you'll study and why that school, who pays and from what source, and your plans after graduation. The roadmap: start 12–18 months ahead

Studying abroad doesn't start when you apply — it starts 12–18 months earlier. The journey has six phases:

• 18–14 months out: orientation and self-assessment — pick a direction, plan IELTS/TOEFL and SAT/ACT if needed.
• 14–10 months out: choose schools and build the list — balancing ambition, academics and budget.
• 10–7 months out: complete your file and take the tests — hit target scores, write essays, secure recommendations.
