Eligibility & how to apply

Most Vietnamese students receive U.S. scholarships on a merit basis — judged on academic results, with no need to prove financial hardship. Here's what to prepare.

Who qualifies?

Merit scholarships are open to most international students and judged mainly on GPA and achievement. Need-based aid is far rarer for international students and offered only by some well-endowed private schools. International students are not eligible for U.S. federal aid (FAFSA) — that's for citizens and permanent residents.

Academic & English requirements

Merit awards typically expect a solid GPA or higher; the most valuable awards go to standout academic profiles. Strong standardized scores (SAT/ACT) and English certificates (TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo) help with both admission and scholarships.

Documents to prepare

Transcripts, standardized and English test scores, essays, recommendation letters, and financial documents (bank statements) for the I-20. Some scholarships require a separate essay or application.

Timing & how to apply

Many scholarships are considered automatically when you apply for admission; others need a separate application with earlier deadlines. Applying early (priority/early deadlines) almost always helps both admission and scholarship chances.

A note on the F-1 visa

A scholarship lowers the amount you must fund yourself, but to receive the I-20 and obtain an F-1 visa you must still prove sufficient funds for the remaining cost. AAE helps you calculate that figure precisely in VND.

FAQ: U.S. study-abroad scholarships

Can Vietnamese students get U.S. scholarships?

Yes. The most common are merit scholarships based on GPA and achievement — open to international students with no financial-need proof required. Many AAE partner schools offer these to Vietnamese students.

What GPA do I need for a scholarship?

It depends on the school and award level. A solid GPA or higher usually qualifies for entry-level awards, while the most valuable awards go to standout profiles. Good English and SAT/ACT scores improve your chances.

Do scholarships require financial proof?

Merit scholarships don't. But to get the I-20 and F-1 visa, you must still prove enough funds for the remaining cost after the scholarship — that's a visa requirement, separate from the scholarship decision.

Can international students get need-based aid like U.S. students?

Rarely. Federal aid (FAFSA) is for citizens and permanent residents only. A few well-endowed private schools offer need-based aid to international students, but it's highly competitive.

How large can scholarships be?

Merit awards for international students typically range from a few thousand to over $20,000/year, depending on the school. Some AAE partner schools offer up to $25,000/year or more for outstanding profiles.

When should I apply for scholarships?

As early as possible. Many scholarships are assessed alongside your admission application, so submitting before priority/early deadlines usually benefits both admission and scholarship outcomes.
